A Playlist for My Father

When I first envisioned this playlist some two months ago, it was going to be an exploration of rockabilly. My father loved rockabilly music, so I thought it was a fitting tribute. As time went by, I decided to add a few ballroom and swing dance songs to the mix. My father, in his last few years, took up dancing after all. Fast forward to now, and what I’ve got is simply a playlist I might make for him if he were alive today. A Playlist for My Father is a mix of some of his favorite genres and songs, along with a few songs he did not know, but I think he might have liked. I imagine this playlist to be something he might play while driving to wherever he was going that day. Happy Father’s Day dad. I miss you.

While I made this playlist specifically for my father. maybe you’ll like this playlist as well. I included a bunch of psychedelic rock bands like Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, and Deep Purple. Of course, I include a few rockabilly legends, such as Eddie Cochran, The Troggs, and Stray Cats. I sprinkled in a touch of Modern Swing, ala Caravan Palace, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. There’s a bunch of random artists: The Beatles, Roy Orbison, David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, and even Amy Winehouse. Yes, my 71-year-old dad loved Amy Winehouse. Totally shocked me when I found out, but I digress. This playlist is truly a grab bag of so many genres. And no, he would not have approved of the message of some of these songs (Steppenwolf especially), but he would have liked the music.

I hope you enjoy A Playlist for My Father.

Comparing A Playlist for My Father with A Tribute to My Mother

When I started AudioPerfecta.com, one of my first playlists was a tribute to my mom (published on her birthday). In that playlist, I shared a bunch of songs that reminded me of her. In this week’s playlist, however, I did a mix full of songs that my dad either liked, or I think he would have liked. It’s interesting the difference between the two tributes. With that said, it’s obvious that my love for music comes from both sides of the family. Sure, my mom loved music more than my dad, but I certainly like my dad’s taste in music more than my mom’s. It seems just like yesterday when I played 5 O’clock World at the end of my shift, and he exclaimed how much he loved the song. Oh, and Wooly Bully is kind of a family joke. My mom really loved the song, until my dad told her what the song meant. And while there are certainly different ways to interpret the song, it’s still a funny story.

That’s all I’ve got for you today. Thank you for reading this. As always, rock on, and rocksteady!
