Disco Party 2019!

Ah, disco. How many times have I expressed disdain for the genre of disco music? A lot. Still, as I get older, I find myself softening up to disco. Sure – disco seems a bit two dimensional at times, but disco brought new sounds to music. So while Disco Party 2019 won’t give you a whole lot of deep and thought provoking lyrics, when listened to in the context of the 70s – disco music was pretty revolutionary. In fact, without disco’s reliance on electronic sounds, we might not have the electronica and EDM genres of today. Disco music contributed a great deal to modern music, and besides – it’s really fun to dance to. If you really need another reason to listen, just remember – it’s ok to like bad music.

Disco Party 2019 brings you a lot of your favorite disco tracks. The Bee Gees, Abba, Donna Summer, and KC and the Sunshine Band all make appearances. We also sample a few lesser known tracks by Yellow Magic Orchestra, Cerrone, and Amant. Disco Party 2019 gives you even gives you a couple experimental tracks, such as Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven.”

So get your dancing shoes on and make sure that bass effect is on high. Disco Party 2019 is coming your way!

Where’s the funk in this disco party?

I debated back and forth – should I include funk? After all, disco and funk have a good deal of overlap. Besides – who doesn’t like a little bit of George Clinton here and there? Still, while some of the songs included on Disco Party 2019 do indeed fall into the disco/funk overlap – not all funk music is really disco – so maybe I’ll do a seperate funk playlist instead. We’ll turn this mutha out!

On another note – maybe you wonder how I made a disco playlist? Or maybe you wonder how I make any playlist. That’s a secret that I’ll keep till my grave! Ok, ok, I’m lying. In fact, Friday’s article will lay out the process of making a new playlist. I explain the rules I follow, the process of finding songs to fit a playlist and a whole lot more!

Looking to next week, I have something special planned. Next week will hold a special theme: Electronic and Modern Swing! We’ll feature artists such as Caravan Palace, Swing Republic, The (new) Squirrel Nut Zippers, and more! Sidenite, some of these swing artists owe their own success to disco music. What would artists like Parov Stellar do without that thumping beat from bands such as Dinosaur and The Trammps?

Come back Friday to learn the rules of making a playlist, and comeback next week for modern swing! You’ll have fun, I promise!
